RACHAEL, TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF?
I was born in Tasmania, Australia, and come from a family of dancers and theatre performers. I studied dance from the moment I could walk, and am lucky to say that I still do it for my profession. Dance has allowed me to travel all over the world, and it brought me to beautiful Copenhagen, where I have been living since 2014.
WHICH CLASSES DO YOU TEACH AT YO?
YO Pilates, YO Ballet, YO Barre
HOW DID YOU FIND YOUR WAY INTO TEACHING?
It happened quite naturally, really. I was approached by a large dance studio in Melbourne about eight years ago, to teach an open ballet class once a week, and it just flowed on from there. Over the years I have been able to develop my teaching style, and and adapt it to many forms of classes from dance to fitness, to people of all ages and abilities.
WHAT DOES IT GIVE YOU TO TEACH OTHERS IN MOVEMENT?
I get to meet so many amazing people and hear their stories! It is the most fulfilling feelingo see people develop right before your eyes, and gain deeper understanding and awareness of their bodies, whilst sharing the joy of moving together in a communal space. I have been taught by so many amazing teachers throughout my (short) life, and I try to bring a little bit of each of them within my own classes. That is very special to me. It is important to give back, and honour the work of the people who come before you, and share that with my students.
YOUR TRAINING/MOVEMENT PHILOSOPHY?
Movement is medicine – you gotta keep moving! I also think it is important to change up your movement patterns regularly. It’s a great way to stimulate the brain, but also to allow your body to move in different ways. Get creative! I believe you should listen carefully to your body to see what it craves.
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR MOTIVATION?
My motivation comes in so many different forms. You only have one body, so you need to look after it. My entire being always feels better once it has been moving. My mind becomes clearer and I feel more alive! To move gives me a stronger outlook in life, and my general well-being is enhanced.
WHAT IS YO TO YOU?
It is a little haven to turn-off from the pace of the outside world, to allow a moment of internal focus. Then we can all get back out there with re-charged energy!
WHAT DOES MOVEMENT MEAN TO YOU?
Movement is absolutely EVERYTHING!
WHAT DOES HEALTH MEAN TO YOU?
In simple terms, I like to think of health as a balance of physical and mental well-being.
YOUR ULTIMATE GUILTY PLEASURE?
This is a tough question! Maybe it is an exquisite red wine, with a great selection of cheese.
YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS IN A BALANCED EVERYDAY LIFE?
